What is Genicular Artery Embolization Treatment
Dr. Aakash Patel performs a minimally invasive procedure called Genicular Artery Embolization for knee pain. This technique reduces the abnormal blood supply to the inflamed lining of the knee joint, which may help reduce pain and improve joint function in selected patients with osteoarthritis. It does not repair worn cartilage, and results vary from person to person.
For frozen shoulder and ankle or heel pain (plantar fasciitis), a related technique called transarterial embolization may be considered for selected patients. It is still developing, and the evidence is more limited than for the knee. Dr. Patel explains the options, benefits and risks to patients experiencing musculoskeletal issues.
How We Process
Dr. Aakash Patel provides Genicular Artery Embolization for knee pain (and transarterial embolization for selected shoulder or heel pain), a minimally invasive outpatient procedure. The procedure usually takes about one to two hours, and most patients go home the same day.
Here's what to expect during your embolization procedure:
- Upon arrival, you'll be provided with a comfortable hospital gown and positioned on the exam table, which will be adjusted for optimal access to the treatment area. Special protective measures will be taken to ensure your safety and comfort.
- Dr. Patel will begin by administering a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area. Using X-ray imaging guidance, he will carefully locate the affected area before and during the procedure to guide the catheter.
- A small needle puncture will be made in an artery, usually at the top of the thigh. Through this puncture, a thin catheter will be inserted and guided to the genicular (or other relevant) arteries.
- Once the catheter is in place, tiny particles will be injected through it to block the blood flow to the affected area. This process, known as embolization, aims to reduce pain and inflammation in the treated joint; results vary.
- After the procedure, you may experience some discomfort, which can be managed with medication. You'll be monitored for a few hours before being discharged home with instructions for follow-up care.
