What is Varicocele Disease?
Dr. Aakash Patel is a Vascular and Interventional Radiologist in Ahmedabad who treats varicocele. It is a condition that is characterised by increased veins that are found in the scrotum. The condition, which is often an important source of male infertility may be caused by faulty valves within the veins, or pressure that a vein experiences due to adjacent structures. Though varicoceles typically don't trigger visible symptoms, they could greatly affect fertility, decreasing the quality and quantity of sperm produced.
Treatment options are available. Dr. Patel offers treatment planned for each individual, including minimally invasive procedures aimed at treating varicoceles. By addressing the underlying problem, treatment aims to restore normal blood flow and may help relieve symptoms; for men with infertility due to varicocele, results vary from person to person. Dr. Aakash Patel explains the options, their benefits and their risks before treatment.
Symptoms of Varicocele
- Dull testicular pain or aching in your scrotum, which often gets better when you lie down
- Swelling in your testicles or scrotum
- Shrinking in your testicles (testicular atrophy)
- Inability to achieve pregnancy after at least a year of trying (infertility)
- A small lump above your affected testicle
What is Coil OR Glue Embolization Treatment
Dr. Aakash Patel treats varicoceles, which is a condition which causes the veins of the scrotum to expand, which can cause swelling, pain as well as infertility. Dr. Patel uses a minimally-invasive procedure known as varicocele embolization, to treat this problem. In the course of treatment, radiologists insert a coil or utilizes special substances to block the vein affected by diverting blood flow from the area. The procedure may help relieve symptoms and improve fertility in some patients, and offers an alternative to surgery for problems related to varicocele.
How We Process
Dr. Aakash Patel offers Coil OR Glue Embolization treatment for Varicoceles, an outpatient procedure that often does not require an overnight hospital stay. Many patients go home the same day; the doctor advises on this based on each patient's condition.
Here's what to expect during your Coil OR Glue Embolization Treatment of Varicoceles:
- Upon arrival, you'll be prepared for the procedure by wearing a hospital gown and being positioned comfortably on the exam table. Special measures will be taken to ensure optimal access to the treatment area while prioritizing your safety and comfort.
- Dr. Patel will begin by administering a local anesthetic to numb the treatment site. Using imaging guidance such as ultrasound or fluoroscopy, he will carefully locate the varicoceles before and during the procedure to guide placement of the coils or glue.
- A small needle puncture will be made in the skin of the groin or upper thigh area to access the vein. Through this puncture, a catheter will be inserted and guided to the site of the varicoceles.
- Once in position, either coils or glue will be delivered through the catheter and into the varicocele veins. These materials will cause the veins to clot and eventually close off, redirecting blood flow to healthier veins.
- After the embolization procedure, the incision site will be monitored for any signs of bleeding or complications. You'll receive post-procedure instructions and may be discharged shortly thereafter, with guidance on resuming normal activities and follow-up appointments.
